How to Make a Fabric Flower

Making Fabric Flowers.

Fabric flowers are a wonderful kind of needlework that we have told you about before. In this given article, we will describe the process of chamomile flower creation in this technique.

How to Make a Fabric Flower ?These are fabric flowers, quite easy to make. The flower composition will consist of 3 flowers and one half-opened bud. We will also need to make flower leaves with 5 pieces: 3 big leaves and 2 little ones.

A big chamomile flower

Big fabric flowers consist of a centre of dark yellow color, 2 circles of petals, a circle of calyx lobe and a stem.

How to Make a Fabric Flower

White silk or cambric will do fine as material for the big chamomile flower. The fabric needs to be starched beforehand. You will need to cut out 2 circles of 2 inches in diameter for one flower. In other words, we are going to need 6 circles for 3 flowers. First, circles must be soaked in spirit or vinegar. Then, the circles need to be colored in yellowish solution of a fabric coloring agent to convey the fabric slight natural yellowness. The centers of the circles (approximately 1 in) must be touched up with yellow-greenish paint, using a brush. When all the circles are dry, cut 12 petals for 2 circles till the border of yellow-greenish toning. The centre of the circle is pierced.

To shape the petals, take a silicone rug for pressing. Make furrows on the face side of every petal with a wide double knife along the petal towards the circle’s centre. Turn the circle of petals, and take a palette knife or hook and press a furrow between the previous 2 face furrows. A petal should look slightly curved. Shape 12 petals this way. Then take a round metal tool for shaping fabric flowers, 0.6 inches in diameter and make a concavity along the centre of the petal circle from the face side. Shape the 2nd petal circle the same way.

Calyx lobes

To make fabric flowers look natural, you’ll need to cut out a circle 1” in diameter. The fabric has to be thicker for the petals. The color is grayish-green, a subdued color. The fabric has to be starched. To convey the calyx lobes' natural shape, you need to put the cut circle on a silicone rug with the back side of the fabric up. To get curved calyx lobes, make 1 furrow in the middle of each calyx lobe towards the centre of the circle.

Flower centre

The chamomile centre may be made from the thick mixture of flour and glue. Shape a round flat centre. The centre is pressed out with a little round tool for fabric flowers. Color the centre in the dark yellow color.

The flower stem

The flower stem is made from wire which is covered with glue and wrapped with paper the same color as the calyx lobe.

Assembling fabric flowers

The flower stem is stuck to the chamomile centre. Then 2 circles of petals are put on the stem. They are stuck to the centre. The circle of calyx lobes is put on and stuck to the stem in the last turn.

A half-opened bud

making fabric flowers

The petals of a bud are made smaller in diameter than 1.8 inches. Starch and color the circle of petals. Cut out 12 petals. Shape the furrows from the face side with a single knife, then make 2 grooves from the back side with a palette knife. Pierce the centre and press it out with a big round pressing tool to get the effect of a closed flower.

The calyx lobe, centre and stems are made the same way as in the big flower. Assembling the bud is very similar to assembling the big flower.

The leaves are cut out from the starched fabric of greenish-grey color. A double groove is passed from the centre on the face side. Use a narrow double knife. Then make side streaks with a single knife from the central streak. Stick the pieces of wire to the back side of a leaf.

All the details for a bouquet are ready: 3 big flowers, 1 half-opened bud, 2 small leaves and 3 big ones. Let’s put our bouquet together by intertwining wires, wrapping them with green paper and sticking it in. When the glue dries, our fabric flowers are ready. This sweet bouquet may serve as an element of decor for clothes, interior or as an attractive accessory.
