Fabric flowers tools and accessories
To shape flowers in a certain way, you will need the following tools:
A set of special tools which look like balls of different diameters on stems. They are used to press out the roundish deepening on the flower petals.
Knife-cutters to make thin furrows on the fabric. They look like single, double, or triple looms with razors which have blunt edges.
Hooks are used for curling the edges of the leaves and petals and making soft furrows on fabric. Irons are also applied for furrows on fabric.
A draw plate is a special tool to make stems for flowers.
Various presses and molds may be used for manufacturing flowers.
A heating device to warm the tools up. This may be a special soldering iron with nests to change the tools, as mentioned above. An oven or a burner may also beused to warm the tools up.
A rubber cushion is the tool that you need to put on a detail for pressing it out.
Fabric flowers materials
Fabrics used for the manufacturing of flowers are natural silk, satin, velvet, acetate silk, viscose, cambric, and synthetic fabrics. Every kind of fabric requires a special temperature regime for thermal pressing out.
Thin copper wire is used for the creation of the flower stems. The thickness of the wire shouldn’t exceed 0.5 in.
Crape paper is used to entwine the stems and the little narrow leaves.
Cotton will come in handy to center the flower.
For the manufacture of fabric flowers, you may also need threads, beads, glass beads, stresses, and other decorative elements.
Glue, which you use for pasting the details together, shouldn’t change the color or leave any stains.
Preparing fabric for work
After you are sure about the color palette and the concept of a flower, you need to pick up the right fabric. As it was mentioned before, this may be silk, satin, velvet, acetate silk, viscose, cambric, or synthetic fabrics. You may pick up fabric of the required color or dye fabric with the color you need. For this purpose, dyes for the fabric are applied. There are dyes for silk or all-purpose dyes, suitable for various fabrics.
Fabric flowers are made from starched fabrics, which is why the next stage of fabric processing is starching. Silk fabrics are starched in the gelatin solution, as starch may influence the glitter and color of silk fabrics. The solution is found in the following:
Dissolve 1 tablespoon of gelatin in 1 glass of cold water. Leave the solution for 1-2 hours. Then, put the vessel with the solution in a water bath and warm it until the gelatin completely dissolves. Don’t let it boil, since gelatin will lose its properties. A less concentrated solution of gelatin is used for thick fabrics. For velvet, it’s only applied to the wrong side of the fabric.
Cut fabric into pieces that are 20Х12 inches or smaller. Dip a piece of fabric into the vessel with solution. The fabric must be soaked with the solution, and then take the piece out and wring it out slightly. Leave the piece to dry on thin fishing line or wire. To prevent the fabric from sticking, fix it at the very end of the clothes peg. Then, iron the fabric when it’s still a little wet. Now the fabric is ready for the marking of the pattern’s contours on it.
Fabric flowers: preparing the pattern
To make a flower similar to a natural one, you need to sacrifice one real flower.
Take a real flower of the required size. Separate its calyx lobes and petals. Separate the petals according to their dimensions and count their quantity. Then, take one middle-sized petal of each dimension type, spread it, and transfer its contour to the tracing paper. Record the type of the petal and its quantity in the flower on the pattern. Do the same with every leaf of the flower. Put all of the patterns of petals and leaves in a separate envelope and write the flower’s name.
